Patchwork Living Blogging Bee #18

Hosted by myself and Frugal Kiwi, the Patchwork Living Blogging Bee is our Internet version of a quilting bee. Each of our lives is a patchwork of what was passed down to us, what we find around us, and what people share with us. We hope that you’ll join us by adding a virtual “patch.” Each week we feature our favorite submissions from the previous blog hop. Here are three that caught my eye: The sweet cheese bread from Our Eventual Homestead makes me wish I wasn’t wheat intolerant. Oh, that cream cheese filling! The Lone Home Ranger shares a post about getting started with composting. Another compost convert? I love it! Karen at Renegade Homestead is making her own nitrate-free cold cuts. No packaging, and healthier too. Thanks for sharing these posts, folks! Time to add your piece to the quilt. We hope you will share the best posts that you have to offer to enrich our lives in this week’s Patchwork Living Bee. Now, for a couple guidelines for our new Blogging Bee community. Please share links to posts that will help our readers live a more simple, sustainable, and frugal lifestyle. Recipes are welcome, but remember...

Patchwork Living Blogging Bee on Holiday

Whether you’re baking, frying latkes, wrapping gifts, or just watching the weather outside your window, it’s a busy time of year. Here are three that caught my eye. 1. I love the pants bowl shared by Kanelstrand! Great way to upcycle old pants – PLUS, I’ve just started crocheting again. Score! 2. Eight Acres shared a cure for dealing with hens who eat their eggs. Very interesting – I’d heard that a deficiency could be the culprit in this situation, but this solution? New to me! 3. Knife-Fork-Spoon shared a post about curing olives naturally. My dad makes great olives (really great) but he uses lye and that just kind of creeps me out. I’d love to try the natural method, though I don’t know how feasible it would be to ship olives here. Maybe I’ll have to visit dad when his trees are ready to harvest… Time to add your piece to...

We hope that you’ll join us by adding a virtual “patch.” Each week we feature our favorite submissions from the previous blog hop. Here are three that caught my eye. 1. I’ve been dabbling in a bit of fermentation myself, so I enjoyed reading about Sovereignty Farms’ experiences with items like sauerkraut and kamut sourdough starter. 2. My Kids Eat Squid reviews The Parchment Paper Cookbook and shares a recipe for Stuffed Chicken Breast in parchment. Looks good! 3. Martha and Me shares a recipe for sweet potato muffins that sounds fabulous. Time to add your piece to the quilt. We hope you will share the best posts that you have to offer to enrich our lives in this week’s Patchwork Living Bee. Now, for a couple guidelines for our new Blogging Bee community. There were some great ones last week, but since the holidays are coming (fine! I said it!) these Christmas posts caught my eye. 1. NZEcochick shared some Christmas gift ideas from around the web. I particularly liked the infused sugars. So pretty. 2. My partner in crime, Frugal Kiwi, offers another roundup of projects that would make great gifts. 3. My Ecoventure tackles the topic of handmade versus store bought gifts. Does your family enjoy homemade or do they expect “real” gifts? Time to add your piece to the quilt. We hope you will share the best posts that you have to offer to enrich our lives in this week’s Patchwork Living Bee. Now, for a couple guidelines for our new Blogging Bee community. There were some great ones last week, but these in particular inspired me: 1. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at sprouting, so the post at Eight Acres about sprouting seeds caught my eye. 2. I ate lunch eons ago in an Indian restaurant in Sebastopol. The dish was called samosas, but it was served without the crust. Looking over the recipe for samosas at My Ecoventure, I think simply serving the filling will help me replicate that dish! (Thank you!) 3. Kelly at the Morris Tribe talks about alternative lighting options. I’d love to implement some of her ideas, but I’m still convincing my husband that it doesn’t need to be noonday bright at all hours. (We have a ways to go on that front!) Thanks to everyone who shared...

Loved the post from Tropical Homestead about making breadfruit tamales, because I’m never sure what to do with breadfruit. Also great to see another Hawaii Island sustainability blog. 2. I’ve been playing with fermentation a bit, so it was nice to read about Laura Grace Weldon’s experience with making traditional sauerkraut. 3. Frugally Sustainable tackles how to earn a little income while living sustainably. Thanks to everyone who shared a post last week!
