A warm bowl of cinnamon oatmeal is such comfort food! This rolled oats recipe is easy to make and ready quickly — without the little packets.

Growing up, I remember my mom used to make the perfect rolled oats recipe. Seriously, I swear she was the oatmeal master.

She’d microwave it to just the right temperature, put just the right amount of milk so that it would be just the right consistency. Then she’d tell me to be careful with the hot center, so I worked my way around the edges first.

It’s also important to note that I never, EVER ate any of the other flavors. Apples and cinnamon? Yuck! Cinnamon oatmeal and spice? Eh, never tried it. And original? Well, who wants original when you can have maple and brown sugar!?

Ah, memories. Even though it was the instant maple and brown sugar Quaker oatmeal — complete with genetically modified ingredients, artificial sugar, and preservatives — I remember it fondly.

Eighteen or so years later, here I was craving that delicious, warm goodness of maple and brown sugar oatmeal but knowing better than to buy the instant oatmeal of my childhood. And I didn’t want to spend money on organic boxed versions because even those have questionable ingredients. (Though they can make a great alternative in a pinch!)

Simply moving away from the processed quick oats is a huge step in the right direction — especially when you flavor it with real ingredients.

To recreate my beloved childhood rolled oats recipe, I used three simple ingredients (besides the oats): pure maple syrup, a little bit of cream, and cinnamon sprinkled on top. Isn’t that easy?

I love simplicity. I love real food. And I love this rolled oats recipe. You’re all set for a comfort food breakfast to start your day!

I agree with Candi, soaking the oats really improves the taste and nutrition. I have never put maple syrup or any sweetener in my oatmeal but after reading this I have to try it! I am afraid I might get spoiled and not be able to go back 🙂 I also cook my oatmeal in coconut milk instead of water. It is delicious that way!

Coconut water – now that’s a good idea!

YUM! The only thing I do different is let the oats soak overnight before.

    Makes it creamier and healthier.
